Huawei has launched the Huawei P Smart 2021, a new offering in a highly competitive category –θήκες κινητών– . With a large screen and quad-camera, can it stand out from the crowd? Here there is our full review.
Design – Screen
For starters, it has a 6.67 ”screen, with total body dimensions of 165.7 x 76.9 x 9.3mm and weight 206g. High up in the center is the “punch hole” selfie camera, changing position and shape compared to last year’s P Smart, which adopted the “teardrop” design.
With FHD + resolution, 395ppi density and IPS panels, it offers overall quality results, but of course, black is not the best. As AMOLED technology is now found in similar models, it may not seem satisfactory to some, but it does its job with dignity in terms of brightness and viewing angles – something important in the daily lives of many.
On the back, there is the quad camera system on the left side, while otherwise the back remains clean with a distinctive Huawei logo on the opposite, bottom. The glossy finish “shows” in each of the three available colors (Crush Green / Blush Gold / Midnight Black) while the materials used give it a premium feel to the hand. It remains plastic, but it would be unfair to say that it does not have an elegant design.
The small bezels of the screen help in this, as well as the transition to a “punch hole” selfie camera, as thanks to all this the mobile phone keeps a “clean” aesthetic in every place. Even the vertical arrangement of the cameras is thin and discreet, while their thickness is not an obstacle when the mobile phone rests with its back on a surface. In any case, it is common to use a mobile phone case, in which case the already small bump will practically disappear.
Huawei P Smart 2021 Features
The USB-C charging port is located on the bottom of the device, between the single speaker and the 3.5mm headphone jack. On the right side of the device is the Power button, which has a built-in fingerprint reader and above it, the volume keys.
Although only the speaker offers enough volume, of course, it begins to lose quality as the volume gets louder – it does not bother with calls, but for anyone listening to music without headphones, you may need to invest in a pair. Finally, on the left side is the port for SIM and microSD card, to expand the storage space.
Inside this beautiful body, then, is the octa-core Kirin 710A of 14nm (compared to the Kirin 710 at 12nm), framed by 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The Kirin 710A has four Cortex-A73 clocked at 2.0GHz and four Cortex-A53 at 1.7GHz, accompanied by the Mali-G51 MP4 GPU. From wireless technologies, Bluetooth 5.2 and dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac are supported with consistently good signal quality, but NFC is absent.
In practice, this means that it can cope with simple everyday uses such as social media, browsing and (very) light gaming, but it does not have anything more to compete with devices at the same price levels as newer processors. The rivalry between Huawei and the US has led the company to domestic solutions for various components and the Kirin 710A is one of them, made in China. It does not impress or trouble, it just does its job as long as the user does not expect anything extraordinary.
The 5000mAh battery can last for hours in use, to a point that is hard to find in a modern smartphone. In addition, the package includes a 22.5W quick charger that can fully charge it in less than two hours and reaches half in about 40-45 minutes. The times may not seem impressive at first glance, but let’s not forget the impressive autonomy, which makes the need for charging less frequent.
Huawei P Smart 2021 Software
In software, let’s start with something familiar and basic: Google Mobile Services are not included. Having taken this out of the way, it uses Huawei’s EMUI 10 which is based on Android 10, so for anyone using Android then the environment will be familiar. Several of the biggest apps are in AppGallery, Huawei’s app store, but the shortcomings are obvious to someone who relies on the Google ecosystem without realizing it.
Huawei P Smart 2021 Camera
Reaching the quad camera, we find the basic 48MP wide-angle accompanied by the 8MP ultra-wide, the 2MP macro and a depth sensor that completes the system. For the data of the category, it offers a fairly flexible camera application that includes, among others, Pro mode so that the user can configure parameters such as exposure, ISO, white balance, etc. It is thorough and in the hands of an experienced (or experimenting) user, can makes the difference between a mediocre and a good photo.
With this data, even in Standard mode, the main camera captures good quality photos in ideal lighting conditions, perhaps a little higher than the standard in the category. The “Master AI” that he uses to adjust the scenes does a good job, mainly, as the noise does not appear strongly in images with parts of the scene with poor lighting. Where it makes the difference, mainly, is in low light conditions. Without the night mode the results are satisfactory when there is sufficient lighting, but there is no reason not to use this function, as it really gives life to the image.
Conclusion about Huawei P Smart 2021
For a user with a limited budget, Huawei is always attractive. As the company is accustomed to, the camera system is generally good with some twists and turns. The autonomy is excellent and the design of the device does not testify to its cost. However, it is aimed only at users with low requirements, as the processor offers limited performance, the screen does not impress and the lack of Play Store / Google Mobile Services remains a “thorn” for anyone looking for convenience.
